A day of rest – a gift from the Lord

It is easy to lose sight of what is important to us, especially when we fill our days with so many things such as work, church, family obligations, and community involvement.  There are times we get so busy what we feel must be done that things we once enjoyed now seem like work. We adopt a mindset that the things we did to unwind are completely avoided because we feel we do not have the time to spend on them. If we are not careful, we can easily fall into a dangerous trap where we become physically, emotionally, and spiritually tired.

I’ve experienced this more times than I would like to admit; I’m hard-headed and it takes me a while to learn things. Even though the Bible makes a provision for us to set aside one day a week for rest, it has been difficult for me to take the time off especially when I look around at everything that needs to be done. Not only did God make a provision for us to have a weekly day of rest, He instituted it within the Law that he gave Moses to teach the children of Israel: Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed (Exodus 23:12). I know that Christians will often claim that we are no longer under the Law but under grace, and they are correct. However, the reasoning for setting aside one day out of each week for rest goes beyond being a part of the Old Testament canon. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees and Scribes when they were attempting to rebuke Jesus for working on the Sabbath: And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27-28). What Jesus was telling the Pharisees is a lesson that we all need to remember from time to time.

Under the Law, the Jews were required to set aside the seventh day of each week, from what we would consider sundown on Friday evening until Saturday evening (as a reference, see Genesis chapter 1, verses 5, 8, 13, 19, 23, and 31). It was to be a day set apart for rest of the body, soul, and mind, and a day to worship the Lord. Before the law, I can imagine that human society treated this day as we do – as any other day. Instead of it being regarded as a day of rest as God intended, it became another day to work, another day to meet deadlines, another day to toil and labor. Even under the Law, the Sabbath had become transformed from a day of rest to a day of judgment by religious men. Jesus experienced this first hand, as recorded in the gospel of Luke: And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? And they could not answer him again to these things (Luke 14:1-6). In their zeal to discredit Jesus, they were willing to condemn Him for healing on the sabbath when they would have done greater work to keep their own wealth and livelihood.

Under grace, what we now have since the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, we do not have to become “sabbath keepers” as some denominations believe. As Christians, we worship on Sunday, the day of the week that we believe that the resurrected Jesus rose from the grave. For all “legalistic” purposes, Sunday is not the Christian sabbath but simply a day we set aside to worship the Lord Jesus Christ. I know Christians that work on Sunday and I know other that treat Sunday the way that the Pharisees treated the sabbath.

Under grace, I am convinced that it does not matter which day of the week I set aside for the worship of God and as a day of rest. What is more important to God is that whatever day I say I set aside for Him, I must not let it become common or filled like every other day. From a spiritual perspective, we need that day to worship and fellowship with the Lord; from a biological perspective, each week we need one day where we break from our normal routine and get rest for the body, mind, and soul. Under the Old Testament, God made the provision and later the Law reflects His practicality that the day of rest and day of worship should be the same. Under grace, while there is no biblical requirement that the day we set aside to rest and worship must be the same day, for me it is not only practical but it is being a good steward of the time that the Lord has given me.

Jesus understood the need for rest; although He was God, he was also man. His disciples were men – flesh and blood just like us. Shortly after the death of John the Baptist, Jesus and his disciples were living a fast paced life and they were beginning to feel the pressures: And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately (Mark 6:30-32). Jesus understood that if they were not given an opportunity to rest, they would become ineffective in their ministry. They would begin to question the reasons why they were doing all they were doing. They would begin to question His leadership and if they were really effective in their efforts.

If you think about it, when we become spiritually, emotionally, and physically tired, we begin to question ourselves. We get discouraged, we get ineffective. We begin to lose our joy. He doesn’t want us to face spiritual, emotional, and physical exhaustion. This is not the life that Christ has for us. He wants us to live a life of joy and He wants us to be able to get the rest that we need so that we can continue our work effectively and in a manner that brings glory to Him.  

A biblical study of anger: the sins of cruelty, lies, and gossip

bibleLast time, we shared the definition of unjustified anger and we looked at how unjustified anger can turn to wrath as we become fixated on the source of our anger. We saw how God warns us about unjustified anger and in this part of our study, we will look at how our anger, when it is rooted in the things of the flesh and this world, can quickly spiral beyond our control. The last verse I shared in our previous study was written by Solomon and is actually a verse of warning: Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools (Ecclesiastes 7:9). This warning from the Lord, if we will heed it, is God’s way of telling us we should really consider what is really the source of our anger. The second part of that verse, what I consider the qualifier is God calls us fools when we make the conscious decision to hold on to our anger and let it grow.

Unjustified anger, and again, this is anger that is fleshly based and usually happens when we feel that someone or something has caused us to become embarrassed or our best made plans to fail. This unjustified anger is not only a sin, but if we do not learn how to scriptural manage it, it will lead us to commit other sins that are totally out of our character or we normally would not even think to do. This flesh-filled and centered anger and the wrath that accompanies it has a natural tendency to bring out the very worst in our character. Again, Solomon was led by the spirit of the Lord to write Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath (Proverbs 21:24). When we place our pride in the things of the flesh, anything or anyone that gets between us and the object of our pride can become the focus of our anger. Some people take great pride in getting even or making sure that “someone pays the price” for what we perceive they have done. At some time, we all have said that we were going to get even with someone, or make them pay for what they did to us. We are reacting out of unjustified anger; God gives every Christian the same warning through the writings of the apostle Paul: See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men (I Thessalonians 5:15). How easy is it to allow the flesh to handle these situations; it runs against the fleshly nature we all struggle with to simply do good to those who have angered us.

If we allow our unjustified anger to grow into wrath, it can bring out the worst cruelty from within us. Within the book of Genesis there is a story of how the sons of Jacob sought revenge against a young man who had a sexual relationship with their sister, Dinah (I will note here that the Bible does not explicitly say she was raped or if she consented, as it does in other verses. The sexual act itself is not the main point of the story). Her two brothers, Simeon and Levi, humiliated and angered that their sister had a sexual relationship without being married and had that relationship someone other than from the family of Abraham (a first or second cousin, as was tradition), sought to avenge her “humility and shame.” Rather than to seek the counsel of their father, Jacob, they took matters in their own hands. When the man’s father, Hamor, came to ask about allowing his son and Dinah to marry, Levi and Simeon quickly agreed with the requirement that all men in the city become circumcised according to the tradition of Abraham. After agreeing to this request, all the men in the city were circumcised and three days later, Simeon and Levi led a band of servants and they attacked the city, killing the king, his son, and the rest of the men and took a great spoil and captives from the city. When Jacob heard what had been done “in his name,” he said, Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel (Genesis 49:7).

Their anger and wrath led them to unquestionable cruelty. Where we may not respond with so violent of an outburst that we set a snare that allows us to kill an entire city, we do often scheme and create scenarios in our minds. We read in newspapers, the Internet, and even on the news networks the results of some people who aren’t able to stop their wrath. They make plans or take advantage of opportunities that seem to present themselves to strike back at those who have hurt them, angered them, and embarrassed them. Jesus told all that would listen to him, But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (Mathew 5:28). If we take this standard and apply it to our anger, then suddenly, those schemes and ideas, although never acted upon, become sin themselves – as if we had actually done them. Again, turning to the writings of Solomon, A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both. Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy? (Proverbs 27:3-4). When we allow our anger to taint our thinking, there is no limit to how cruel the retribution we feel is warranted by our anger. When we allow our flesh to govern our anger, we become bent on getting even and assuring that we are never harmed again. Sometimes the extent we are willing to take to get even becomes cruel to the extent it is worse than what was done to us.

Unjustified anger, as it develops into wrath, can lead us to become vocal about what we perceive as the injustice against us. It becomes easy to tell others about what was done to us, how we are the victims, and then to cast blame on the person or object of our anger. The apostle Paul witnessed this in his day and realized that it is a struggle against the flesh and he instructed the Christians at the church in Ephesus, Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you (Ephesians 4:31-32). This verse calls Christians to be the opposite. We are to put away anger, bitterness, and wrath, we are not to be loud and boastful about the wrongdoings of others, nor vocalize anything that would cause anyone else to question their character, whether it is true or not. We are not to gossip about others or to spread lies. This is the opposite of what the flesh wants to do. The flesh wants to get even, to belittle, and to punish at all costs. Christ Jesus calls us to rise above the fleshly desires and motivations. Even Peter had to deal with this issue with the early Christians and wrote, Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings (I Peter 2:1). Just as Paul wrote, the apostle Peter is also writing to new-born, recently saved Christians. He is telling them that they are to be different from the world and are to set these things aside. It is hard when this is how we are accustomed to handling those who make us angry. There is a fleshly need to talk bad about them, to envy them of their success while we see ourselves in failure, and it is easy to try to sabotage them. Peter is reminding the Christian that these go against our new nature.

A brief biblical study in mankind’s free will

mens-bible-studyThis devotional actually began as a conversation I had with a former student of mine on Facebook. Being a third year college student, his major required him to take a course in psychology where the nature of free will was discussed.  In one of the lectures, he became bothered by the professor’s insistence that “free will” of the person does not exist in most religions, including Christianity.  Sadly, the professor began to expound on various doctrines held by some of the various denominations that supported his viewpoint.  What is even worse is that the professor would not allow any other discussion on the matter or allow any student to offer a counter argument. When the lecture ended, the professor had succeeded in assuring that his humanist-based argument against all religion stood strong.

In truth, God created humankind – Adam and Eve – to have free will and to be able to exercise it.  Within the first three chapters of Genesis, this free will is demonstrated through the story of the fall of man. Although God had commanded Adam and Eve not to eat of the forbidden fruit, there was no obstacle placed in their way. There was no angel standing guard, there was no force field, or even a canyon that surrounded the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve could freely walk under its shade, could enjoy the fragrance of its blossoms, but were told not to eat of it. The tree, and all that was in the garden were fully accessible to Adam and Eve and would stay that way until man willfully chose the path of disobedience. It is after the fruit is eaten and God’s judgment pronounced where it is recorded in the third chapter of Genesis: And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life (Genesis 3:22-24).

Job also questioned the free will of man.  As he was in the midst of his trials, he asked, Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in? (Job 3:23). Unlike Greek and Roman mythology that teaches that all mortals are at the whims of a pantheon of gods and goddesses whom change the fates of men and women to suit their own passions, our God is one that gave us the ability to make our own choices. We are not given some maze to run, but are told by the Lord, I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live (Deuteronomy 30:19). Our salvation all rests on our decision, for God’s invitation is extended to everyone regardless of their personal history, nationality, race, sex, or any other artificial construct society creates: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). God doesn’t hedge anyone in to make the “right” decision – the most basic decision, to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior is yours to make. God wants us to love him out of our free will, not because we feel that we must.

There are plenty of scriptures that teach that God offers mankind a choice. Even within the writings of the prophets, God still  calls out to man, offering the best that He has that awaits all who will choose to accept and to love Him: Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (Isaiah 55:1). In other words, God is saying that if we choose Him, the best awaits us without price to us. While we may enjoy some of those blessings here, the best is yet to come once we are in Heaven with Him. It is the same concept that Jesus taught, as recorded in the gospel of Matthew: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30). The beautiful thing about our free choice is that when we answer God’s call and accept His offer, He puts no other condition.  During His earthly ministry, Jesus taught: All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out (John 6:37). Notice the concept in both passages – “come to me” – is the only requirement.  It doesn’t say we must come or is it even a commandment to come. It is an invitation to come to the Lord much like one would get to join a family member or a friend for an evening out. Our salvation is dependent upon our free will. We have the choice to accept or reject; to choose death or choose life.

Within the early church, this was taught by the apostles;  Peter told all that would listen to him in those days, And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Acts 2:21). Again, contrary to the claims of the Calvinists (those who believe that only certain people are predestined for Heaven) and humanist alike, this contradicts the central belief of both philosophies. The phrase “whosoever shall call” indicated that only those who call upon the Lord will be saved. While God did make the first invitation that all people could be saved through faith in Him, only those who choose to accept the offer will actually be saved.  It is the free will of the person that determines their eternal relationship with God. The final proof of the role in free will in salvation can be found in the book of Revelation: And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely (Revelation 22:17). Again, the invitation to all people has been extended, again, the hand of God reaches out and says “Come.” It is up to the person to either accept or reject the invitation.
