A biblical study of anger: the sins of cruelty, lies, and gossip

bibleLast time, we shared the definition of unjustified anger and we looked at how unjustified anger can turn to wrath as we become fixated on the source of our anger. We saw how God warns us about unjustified anger and in this part of our study, we will look at how our anger, when it is rooted in the things of the flesh and this world, can quickly spiral beyond our control. The last verse I shared in our previous study was written by Solomon and is actually a verse of warning: Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools (Ecclesiastes 7:9). This warning from the Lord, if we will heed it, is God’s way of telling us we should really consider what is really the source of our anger. The second part of that verse, what I consider the qualifier is God calls us fools when we make the conscious decision to hold on to our anger and let it grow.

Unjustified anger, and again, this is anger that is fleshly based and usually happens when we feel that someone or something has caused us to become embarrassed or our best made plans to fail. This unjustified anger is not only a sin, but if we do not learn how to scriptural manage it, it will lead us to commit other sins that are totally out of our character or we normally would not even think to do. This flesh-filled and centered anger and the wrath that accompanies it has a natural tendency to bring out the very worst in our character. Again, Solomon was led by the spirit of the Lord to write Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath (Proverbs 21:24). When we place our pride in the things of the flesh, anything or anyone that gets between us and the object of our pride can become the focus of our anger. Some people take great pride in getting even or making sure that “someone pays the price” for what we perceive they have done. At some time, we all have said that we were going to get even with someone, or make them pay for what they did to us. We are reacting out of unjustified anger; God gives every Christian the same warning through the writings of the apostle Paul: See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men (I Thessalonians 5:15). How easy is it to allow the flesh to handle these situations; it runs against the fleshly nature we all struggle with to simply do good to those who have angered us.

If we allow our unjustified anger to grow into wrath, it can bring out the worst cruelty from within us. Within the book of Genesis there is a story of how the sons of Jacob sought revenge against a young man who had a sexual relationship with their sister, Dinah (I will note here that the Bible does not explicitly say she was raped or if she consented, as it does in other verses. The sexual act itself is not the main point of the story). Her two brothers, Simeon and Levi, humiliated and angered that their sister had a sexual relationship without being married and had that relationship someone other than from the family of Abraham (a first or second cousin, as was tradition), sought to avenge her “humility and shame.” Rather than to seek the counsel of their father, Jacob, they took matters in their own hands. When the man’s father, Hamor, came to ask about allowing his son and Dinah to marry, Levi and Simeon quickly agreed with the requirement that all men in the city become circumcised according to the tradition of Abraham. After agreeing to this request, all the men in the city were circumcised and three days later, Simeon and Levi led a band of servants and they attacked the city, killing the king, his son, and the rest of the men and took a great spoil and captives from the city. When Jacob heard what had been done “in his name,” he said, Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel (Genesis 49:7).

Their anger and wrath led them to unquestionable cruelty. Where we may not respond with so violent of an outburst that we set a snare that allows us to kill an entire city, we do often scheme and create scenarios in our minds. We read in newspapers, the Internet, and even on the news networks the results of some people who aren’t able to stop their wrath. They make plans or take advantage of opportunities that seem to present themselves to strike back at those who have hurt them, angered them, and embarrassed them. Jesus told all that would listen to him, But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (Mathew 5:28). If we take this standard and apply it to our anger, then suddenly, those schemes and ideas, although never acted upon, become sin themselves – as if we had actually done them. Again, turning to the writings of Solomon, A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both. Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy? (Proverbs 27:3-4). When we allow our anger to taint our thinking, there is no limit to how cruel the retribution we feel is warranted by our anger. When we allow our flesh to govern our anger, we become bent on getting even and assuring that we are never harmed again. Sometimes the extent we are willing to take to get even becomes cruel to the extent it is worse than what was done to us.

Unjustified anger, as it develops into wrath, can lead us to become vocal about what we perceive as the injustice against us. It becomes easy to tell others about what was done to us, how we are the victims, and then to cast blame on the person or object of our anger. The apostle Paul witnessed this in his day and realized that it is a struggle against the flesh and he instructed the Christians at the church in Ephesus, Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you (Ephesians 4:31-32). This verse calls Christians to be the opposite. We are to put away anger, bitterness, and wrath, we are not to be loud and boastful about the wrongdoings of others, nor vocalize anything that would cause anyone else to question their character, whether it is true or not. We are not to gossip about others or to spread lies. This is the opposite of what the flesh wants to do. The flesh wants to get even, to belittle, and to punish at all costs. Christ Jesus calls us to rise above the fleshly desires and motivations. Even Peter had to deal with this issue with the early Christians and wrote, Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings (I Peter 2:1). Just as Paul wrote, the apostle Peter is also writing to new-born, recently saved Christians. He is telling them that they are to be different from the world and are to set these things aside. It is hard when this is how we are accustomed to handling those who make us angry. There is a fleshly need to talk bad about them, to envy them of their success while we see ourselves in failure, and it is easy to try to sabotage them. Peter is reminding the Christian that these go against our new nature.

Unreached expectations and some lessons learned

180231HrfI love gardening and each spring look for seeds to plant and watch grow.  This past spring was no different.  On one of our family shopping trips, my daughter and I were looking at the seed display rack when one package stood out above all others. Being impressed with the pictures and descriptions on the package, I decided to buy a package of cosmos seeds for around a quarter. My daughter and I took an old egg carton, filled each cup with dirt, and planted two seeds into each cup, then placed the egg carton in the window sill.  Just as stated on the package, within ten days, the first sprouts of green appeared in the makeshift seed starting pots.  Within another three weeks, the seedlings were ready to transplant into window boxes.

I would love to tell you that the plants grew and gave an abundance of blossoms as the picture above or even on the seed envelope had shown.  What happened instead is that one set of plants were attacked by bugs, leaving only one plant unscathed.  It never bloomed.  In the other window box, we had four out of six plants survive whatever it was that ate the other ones, but only one plant bloomed – and the two flowers it had were asymmetric – a far cry from the pictures that had led us to buy that particular seed to try.  As my daughter and I dumped out the window boxes this morning, we began to have a discussion about why things don’t always do what we hope they will.  It started simple enough, “Daddy, these flowers didn’t get very pretty like the pictures. What happened?” At one time another, we have all asked that question – “Lord, why didn’t this work?” I am reminded of this passage of scripture: Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil (James 4:13-16).

We’re all guilty of it; we make plans independently from the Lord and when they do not work out the way we want, we immediately begin our attempt to understand why by asking God, “Lord, why didn’t it work?” We even see that the disciples during the time when the Lord Jesus walked the earth also asked this same question: Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? (Matthew 17:19). We all know the story, the disciples went to cast out a devil out of a young man and could not do it.  They then brought the boy to the Lord, whom then was able to cast out the devil.  Instead of rejoicing about the deliverance of the young lad, the disciples kept the focus of the story on themselves; in effect they asked “Lord, why didn’t it work for us?” The gospel of Matthew doesn’t tell us if any time passed between the working of the Lord and the question posed by the disciples.  Knowing myself, it would have been a consuming question that probably would have driven me to ask it nearly immediately after the miracle was performed.  I imagine that the disciples were shocked when they discovered – at the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ – that their attitude was the very reason for their failure to deliver the boy.

So, some of you may be wondering what does planting seeds and the inability of the disciples to release the young boy from being possessed? Had both been successful, where would the glory have been placed?  In the case of the window boxes, I probably would never have thought to give the thanks and praise to the Lord.  Chances are, the disciples would probably have had a similar reaction and would have focused more on their abilities and not the Lord who had given them the abilities.  It would have been nothing to think “wow, those flowers sure are pretty; glad I planted them” or “wow, we just released this precious boy from the devil that possessed him” and not giving the glory, the thanks, and the praise to the Lord. This is the message that the apostle Paul was trying to convey to the early Christians at Thessaloniki when he wrote, Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you (I Thessalonians 5:16-18).

As Christians and children of God, we must remember that our failures do affect God.  Just as I become concerned when my daughter is not able to carry out what she sets out to do, I am sure God has a similar reaction.  I know as a parent there have been several times I have thought to myself, “Sweetie, that’s not going to work…” then have to comfort her as what I knew what was going to happen did.  Since the Bible often compares the roles of parents and the Lord Jesus Christ, I bet there have been times in my life where the Lord has thought, “I wish he would wait, listen and wouldn’t do that…” or “it’s not going to work…” just to have to watch my best made and intended plans fail. With our finite and feeble minds it is hard for us to understand that God has the benefit of being all-knowing, and sees the beginning from the end.  If we just turn to him more in the things that we do and seek His guidance, we would probably experience less failures and more joy. Instead of turning to God when it doesn’t work, what if we make seeking the Lord’s will our first step in even the smallest plan we have?

Being honest in our prayers to God

Yesterday I had the opportunity to sit outside on one of the concrete tables near the building where I teach my history classes.  It was a nice, cool, and sunny day and the feel of the sun was something that I have really missed over the winter months.  I pulled out my pocket-sized Bible and began reading through Psalms when I had a student approach me to ask me some questions about a recent assignment.  When she saw that I was reading the Bible, she began to ask me questions about my faith, how I “fit it in” my life, and some other questions.  I explained to her that I do not define my faith; my faith defines me, she immediately began to ask questions about my understanding about prayer.

Since 2006, I have become more serious about my faith in God.  I also began to take literally the things that I read in the Bible so that I will not have to stand ashamed of my life in front of an Holy God. When she asked me that question, the first verse that came into my mind was: But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear (I Peter 3:15). Although the apostle Peter was referring to the times when Christians will be brought before kings and judges to explain their holding to the faith in Jesus Christ, I believe that this verse has an application that we are always, as Christians, to be ready to explain any aspect of our faith to those that genuinely ask for understanding.  In this case, this student was asking about my understanding of prayer; as a Christian, I owed her the explanation of my understanding.

I began (as I will begin here) to explain that God does not hear every prayer but only hears the prayers of those who have, through faith, been redeemed. While the world holds on to the erroneous belief that God hears all prayers, this is not the case, as taught by Solomon as he was led by the Spirit of God to write: The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous (Proverbs 15:29).  Even the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah understood that God will not hear the prayers of the wicked and unredeemed: Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them (Jeremiah 11:11) The first prayer that God hears from anyone (except the Lord Jesus Christ when he was on Earth) is the prayer of repentance.  The apostle Paul understood this: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13) and That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (Romans 10:9).

God does hear our prayers, but that we have to first understand the condition of our heart.  David, a man after God’s own heart, understood this as he was led by the Spirit of God to write, If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me (Psalms 66:18).  Another Old Testament prophet, Micah, explained why God would not hear the Jewish people, although they were his own chosen people: Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings (Micah 3:4). This is not just an Old Testament principle that has no relevance to today’s New Testament believer; the apostle James explained to the Christians of his day why their prayers were appearing not to be answered: Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts (James 4:3). During Jesus’ earthly ministry, he also taught there was another reason why prayers to God seemingly go unanswered: And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive (Matthew 21:22).
