Beware of the pitfalls of the “modern” faith

Water_safety_sign_Dangerous_currentThis morning, while waiting to have my blood drawn for lab work at the local VA health clinic, a gentleman and his wife sat next to me. He noticed that I was reading the Bible on my smartphone and soon, the three of us were having a conversation about faith and church. For about ten minutes, we were able have an uninterrupted conversation that seemed more of an affirmation to me than any great revelation. All it takes is to think back just twenty years ago to become aware that some things that are happening in our churches and some of the viewpoints held by “Christians” are not in line with biblical doctrines.

The Bible not regarded as the absolute authority

The couple I was talking with were in their mid nineties and the first things we discussed was the role of the Bible. Both the man and his wife were lamenting how far our society has moved in their lifetime. The couple shared how they were now in the process of trying to find a new church home because they no longer felt that God was welcomed in the church where they had been members for the last thirty years. The lady even said that their pastor no longer exclusively teaches Bible on Sunday morning, but will use contemporary writings, poetry, and short stories to make his points. Immediately, I thought of what the apostle Paul told Timothy: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works (II Timothy 3:16-17). Paul also wrote to the early Christians and reminding them, For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope (Romans 15:4). Even in his day, Paul was having to encourage the early Christians to study the Old Testament. He understood that the Old Testament is the foundation on which the New Testament stands. Paul also gave a warning for the early Christians to stay true to what the apostles had taught:  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed (Galatians 1:8).

It is essential that any sermon or message have at its core a biblical foundation. It is the Bible that gives the church authority and it is the Bible that defines the purpose of the church. While the Bible – the Word of God – can live outside the church and is not dependent on the church, the church cannot live and function as the church of God if it is not on a biblical foundation. When the Bible is supplanted by humanist philosophies and is taught from behind the pulpit, it does not bring glory to God. Jesus told the crowd around Him, No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (Luke 16:13). This is especially true for the church. It cannot proclaim that it has the moral authority from the Lord when it is teaching philosophies of the flesh. It is for this cause alone that many of our churches in America are failing. They no longer stand firm on the Bible and have adopted worldly teachings and philosophies to grow their membership.

The Bible is what we are to use as our measuring stick. Not only are we to weigh ourselves according to the scriptures, we are to weigh what is preached to us and what is done around us. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). It cuts through the sin and corruption of the flesh; the apostle Peter wrote, Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you (I Peter 1:23-25). Our very salvation depends upon the Word of God! In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not (John 1:1-5).

Within the book of Revelation, I do honestly believe that this is what happened to the church at Laodicea: And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked (Revelation 3:14-17). In my mind’s eye, this is the church that appeals to a large following – they have every kind of outreach ministry under the sun, they have hundreds attend their services, they have a great contemporary music program, never financially struggle, and with all that, spiritually they are naked. Rather than take firm and biblical stands on doctrine, sin, and social issues, they reach out with a feel-good sermon that appeals to the vanity of human emotions. Jeremiah wrote, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9) We can be deceived by our own emotions – which is why God has made salvation independent of our emotions.

Are you worshiping a totem or the God of the Bible?

Totem_polesIn the late 19th Century, when the fields of anthropology and sociology were still in their infancy, David Émile Durkheim was travelling around the world studying various tribal religions of Stone Age societies.  Naturally curious about the development of religion, he set out to visit Polynesian societies within the Pacific Basin, Alaskan Inuit, Native Hawaiians, and even some of the Pacific Northwest American Indian groups.  His original theory was that each of these religions shared similar traits that could connect them to a much more ancient worship system rooted somewhere within Asia.

As he prepared his research for his latest work, The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life, he made an observation in the Pacific Northwest that not only confounded him, but also caused him to question his own faith in God.  As a child, Durkheim had been raised as an Orthodox Jew in France.  As he attended higher education at the end of the Nineteenth Century, he adopted humanism and forsook all but the ceremonialism of his childhood faith, more out of tradition than out of reverence.  Before his death in 1917, Durkheim had returned to worshiping the God of his fathers but with a stronger passion and zeal than he had as a child, a fact rarely discussed in academic circles today.  The explanation of his change of heart towards the God of his youth came from his academic inquiry of the Pacific Northwestern Indian totem poles.

As Durkheim began to catalogue the totem poles that he encountered in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and the Canadian Pacific Coast, he learned that each small tribe had at least one to as many as three totem poles in each village, depending on the age of the village.  He also learned that each village would, within a generation, choose which gods or spirits to be featured on the totem pole.  Normally, these various tribes would select animals that they believed had the best qualities that they all should aspire to have.  He noticed that strength was represented by a bear, intelligence was represented by birds (either an eagle or owl), ravens represented negotiation skills, turtles represented strength and determination, foxes represented quickness and agility, and fish represented a giving spirit.

What he began to notice is that each of these things assigned to animals – called “personification” within anthropology – was actually traits that the members of the village already, in some form or fashion, already possessed. Within the process of creating a totem pole containing representations of these traits, these Indian groups were not worshiping animals or spirits, but were actually worshipping themselves – they had created their gods in their own image! Durkheim saw a visual interpretation of what the Holy Spirit led Isaiah to write, Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made (Isaiah 28).  In Durkheim’s last year of life, he decided to use his theories on the Pacific Northwestern Indian religion and apply it to his own Jewish faith from childhood.  What he discovered was that just as the Pacific Northwest Indians crafted their own faith to match their needs, he had actually done the exact same thing with his Jewish faith, changing the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob into a God that could not be trusted and only recourse was to adopt a godless existence through humanism. For the rest of his life, Durkheim returned to the Orthodox Judaism of his childhood with a renewed appreciation of his faith.

As Christians, if we are not careful, we can do the exact same thing in our quest to understand our relationship to God. The prophet Jeremiah, as he was led by the Holy Spirit, wrote, Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods? (Jeremiah 16:20). The apostle Paul pondered this tendency of man to create God in his own image as he wrote to the early Christians in Galatia, Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods (Galatians 4:8). What both verses show is that while we know the truth about God and what he expects from us, there is a strong  fleshly desire to create shortcuts, different interpretations of scripture, or a justification of our actions.  When we do these things, we now are worshipping a Jesus of our own making – or a totem Jesus.

Older Christians: are you willing to be a mentor?

Just as the Lord used the everyday activities of a potter to teach Jeremiah, God still speaks to us through the Bible and through the remembering of scripture at what first appears to be strange times. This morning, while I was going through the various emails, I came across one from a faculty member of the college I work at that encouraged us to tell students of the college’s tutoring center, the hours it is open, and the help available to students in a variety of subjects.  The email went so far to explain that the tutoring and mentoring program was designed to help and encourage students to reach their academic potential in an environment that was comfortable and supportive of their needs.

During my office hours, I began to think about the wisdom behind the mentoring and tutoring program that the college has in place.  I then began to think about how within the various writings of the apostle Paul he calls the older and more mature Christian to do the same thing.  In Paul’s letter to Titus, he wrote, But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.  The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you (Titus 2:1-8). Paul is telling Titus, and future Christians through the preservation of this particular letter, that spiritually mature Christians are to mentor and teach younger Christians.

When I was a younger Christian, there were lots of things that I did not understand (please do not misunderstand me,I still do not know or understand everything about the Christian faith).  Not having the benefit of growing up in a biblically based home, I didn’t know a lot about my newfound faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  As a young Christian, I didn’t know the importance of reading my Bible each day, taking time to pray for my needs and others, or even regular church attendance.  As I have matured, and have learned about what it means to be a Christian, I have also begun to understand that as an older Christian, I do have responsibilities: Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.  And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more (Luke 12:43-48).
