The foolishness of the Cross

Within the same book, the apostle Paul wrote, But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (I Corinthians 2:14).  It is the duty of every pastor, Sunday school teacher, and Christian parent to raise up godly children, well grounded in the scriptures, and knowing that Jesus is Lord. Even Solomon understood this simple principle when he penned Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). To decide that the time to begin to set a strong Christian foundation for your child cannot wait until the year before college begins, but begins the day they are born.

Since I began teaching at the college level back in 2004, I have had a few Christian friends and even a couple of pastors tell me that the college campus is not a place for Christians.  I have been told that seeing it as a mission field is flawed and is not biblically led.  Since 2004, I have taught at four different colleges and universities and have had the same desires.  Before each class, I pray and ask God to guard my thoughts, let my mind stay focused, and to allow me the opportunity to share my faith with whom he will have me share it with.

Each of the colleges I have worked for does have a policy that has limited me from openly sharing my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, with the one exception that if the student asks me, then I am free to share.  I make it a point to share my faith as the reason that I am different is because the Lord Jesus Christ Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works (Titus 2:14).  I also share that I am patiently waiting and  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God  (Hebrews 2:12).

Since 2004, I have had the grace and favor of God; I have seen five students come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, a few others rededicate their lives to the Lord, and strengthened and encouraged the faith of half a dozen more. Its not about being popular with the students or being popular or well respected by the faculty; for me, it is about being the very best servant of the Lord that I can be.
